Trauma kills fast — and much of what decides whether an injured person survives happens before they reach hospital. From Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November 2026 we run a full PHTLS provider course at our Nakuru campus. Places are limited, and bookings close on 30 October so that every participant receives the course manual in time to prepare.

Why PHTLS matters in Kenya

Road traffic crashes are the clearest example. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 4,458 people died on Kenyan roads in 2025 — and between January and October of that year Nakuru County recorded the third-highest number of road deaths in the country. Many injured patients die from problems that can be recognised and treated in the first minutes: catastrophic bleeding, a blocked airway, a failing chest, shock. PHTLS teaches you to find and treat those problems in the right order, quickly and under pressure.

What PHTLS is

Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is the internationally recognised trauma course of the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), developed together with the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. It gives everyone who treats injured patients one common approach and one common language — from the roadside to the emergency department.

What you will learn

  • Scene safety and a rapid first impression of the patient
  • The XABCDE primary survey — catastrophic bleeding first
  • Bleeding control: direct pressure, wound packing and tourniquets
  • Airway and breathing problems in trauma, including chest injuries
  • Recognising and managing shock
  • Head injuries and spinal motion restriction
  • Abdominal, pelvic, limb and burn injuries
  • Injured children, older adults and pregnant patients
  • Deciding quickly which patient goes where — and when to leave the scene

How the course runs

Three full days, 08:00 to 16:00, with short lectures, hands-on skills stations and realistic trauma scenarios in small groups. You are assessed through patient simulations and a written test. Successful participants receive the NAEMT PHTLS provider card, valid for four years, issued through our partner Emergency Care Trainers Ltd (ECT), an authorised NAEMT training centre.

The course runs from Friday to Sunday, so most working participants need only one regular working day off.

Who should attend

EMTs and paramedics, nurses, clinical officers and doctors — on ambulances, in emergency departments, in county health services and in private practice. If you treat injured patients, PHTLS is for you.
